One of the most dramatic of all Biblical passages on betrothal is that of Ephesians 5, where we read (among other things):
Eph 5:22-28 Wives,113 submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.Note that this passage speaks of Christ and the church during the betrothal period (verse 27 ‘that he might (future tense) present it to himself’). Thus during the betrothal period husbands are to ‘wash’ their wives with the ‘water of the word’; and wives are to be subject to their husbands in everything
[1] (excepting, of course, the one thing that separates the betrothal period from actual marriage, which one thing waits on the will of the husband
[2] (and, if applicable, the terms of the betrothal)).
In Titus 2 we read:
The aged women likewise,... That they may teach the young women ... to love their husbands, ...obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. When the girls were younger and their mothers (etc.) were teaching them these things, it was always 'in theory'... ie 'one day when you have a husband you will need to...'. But during the betrothal period the theory has become reality. Now (as will come later with the children) the older women get to teach the young woman how to be 'obedient to her own husband'... and the husband has a name. And not only does he have a name, he has a will. He may (horror of horrors) likeliver. Thus the new wife, into whose house liver has never even entered, may need (at the least) to read up on recipes therfore!
Which of us, when we are going to go on a trip, wait until we get in the car to plan the route? While our day to day reality right now may be in our own house, or driving back and forth to work, still we would each be wise enough to purchase a map, get on mapquest, and plan our route.
