Although, under the Biblical principle of letting your ‘yes be yes’ the bride and groom must be considered betrothed from the moment of the fathers agreeing, (or the completion of actions affirming the betrothal) nonetheless, for the sake of all concerned, it would no doubt be best to make a formal ceremony of it; perhaps in front of the entire community, with the vows administered by the elders.[1]

We see this principle in the Scriptures at several points.
